By the demand of many customers, Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries is bringing back its popular class 'Ancient Art of Rug Weaving' starting this March.

Come join us on Thursdays beginning March 8^th for a four-week beginner's rug weaving class by master craftsman Hayk Oltaci. He will teach you the ABCs of rug weaving, including vertical weaving techniques (knotting, warp, weft) and the beginnings of design at his beautiful atelier in Astoria.

Commemorating 500 Years of Armenian Printing

The Diocesan Center in New York will be the venue for a special presentation honoring the 500th anniversary of Armenian printing, on the evening of Tuesday, January 24.

Zakarya Mildanoglu, a columnist for the Agos Weekly of Istanbul, will be the keynote speaker, delivering his remarks in Armenian. Hagop Vartivarian will be the master of ceremonies.

The event, which begins at 7:30 p.m. in Guild Hall of the Diocesan Center, will take place under the auspices of the Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), in collaboration with several organizations.

Last Saturday, September 9th, the Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs had its annual fundraising event on the Oceania Street in Bayside, New York. If any of my friends did not make it to the festival, I wish to share in this small write up as how the festival went.

Before I go ahead, let me apologize for not properly publicizing the name of the church in my e-mail about this event, as I meant to write the location and the name of the church as "the Oceania Street Festival at the Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs". I am sure some of you made jokes on me, but I rather you laugh and not be mad. J

A month before the festival, I signed up as a vendor "Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries". On Saturday morning I was there very early to set up my merchandize. I took with me some pillows, a few small size antique rugs, some brochures and weaving frames. As it took me not too long to set up my table, I walked back to the Church entrance where a big crowd was intensely reading something off a board that was resting on an easel. I was very curious to see what were they reading and who were they. Well of course, they were my fellow Armenian friends and members of this not too small Armenian community that were ready to perform their assigned duties for the day at the Festival. More than 80 volunteers signed up to help out for this biggest fundraising event of the year for the Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs. We were fortunate to have a gorgeous weather, not to count the ten minutes shower that poured on us and at my already covered pillows and rugs. I react quickly, believe me. J

Throughout the whole day there was continuous entertainment by Armenian and Greek Dance groups, different Armenian solo singers and a band. Shish, chicken and lule kebabs along with tomatoes and peppers were sizzling on two big grills teasing the crowd with its delicious smell. The dessert table was filled with many trays of scrumptious baklava and kadaif. Even describing it to you makes me hungry and drool over. Yes, we Armenians, and in fact all other ethnic nations, are very fortunate to be able to preserve our language, culture and traditions in the United States of America through events just like Saturday's.

The following day, on Sunday, September 11th, the Armenian Church of the Holy Martyrs held a special requiem service for the victims of the 9/11 attack. We also honored the acts of brave men and women- the first responders - who heroically risked their lives to save others. This year the 10th year anniversary of this horrific tragedy that change America forever fell on Sunday - the Feast of the Exaltation of the Holy Cross - one of the five major Feast Days of the Armenian Church. May God rest the souls of all who perished on that dreadful morning.

When I walked into Hayko Fine Rug and Tapestries on the Upper East Side this summer, I was transported instantly to Istanbul. Ok, I have never been there, but it's what I imagined it to be. I was honored to be called in for a feng shui consultation by Hayko Oltaci, owner of this magical store. Hayko and I discussed what he was trying to achieve and together we used this information and various feng shui adjustments to help enhance his business.

Believe it or not, this respite is right in the middle of New York City!
Many people usually ask me, "Is it ok to have old things in my home?" My answer to will vary according to what the person is referring to. If the objects in question are things left over from exes that make you cringe each time you look at it, I'd say better to get rid of them! But, if it's something that is infused with beautiful energy and brings you joy each time you see it, like one of Hayko's rugs, I would say cherish it and if possible, highlight it by putting it somewhere in your space where you see it all the time. This way you'll lift your chi each time you see it.

Dear Friends,

With great excitement I wish to let you know about an upcoming event that I will participate in. I am most certain that you probably don`t know how multi-talented I am. Along with selling, restoring and cleaning antique rugs, believe it or not, I can also SING.

I am a member of a chorale group called `Shnorhali`. The `Shnorhali` chorale group has 40 singers including myself. Since April of this year we have been intensely practicing for our grand debut. On Sunday, December 12th, at 5:00 pm please come to Landmark on Main Street Jeanne Rimsky Theater, 232 Main Street, Port Washington, NY 11050 and see the amazing production of the Shnorhali choral group and friends presenting the ``Night of the Armenian Classical Music``.

The program will include the amazing works of two truly great Armenian composers Komitas (1869-1935), the founder of the Armenian classical music, and Aram Khachaturian (1903-1978), one of the most original contemporary composer of the 20^th century music. I will be singing in the line with the Basses. If you can`t believe that I am a Bass, come and see how deep my voice is when I sing.

This year, October 22nd commemorates the 75th death anniversary of Gomidas Vardaped. We call him the genius of Armenian music; teacher and a composer of sacred and folk music. In all of the Armenian history there is no other cultural figure that would be the image to which almost all the poets of the 20th century turned. Poets of all styles and directions wrote about Komitas throughout the century. On the evening of November 19th our cultural meetup group will get together to remember and honor Gomidas Vartabed through the words of famous Armenian poets and composers.

Julietta Galstian, teacher of the Armenian language and literature, will present to us in Armenian the poems and songs of Gomidas Vardaped. With her amazing talent she will help us live through Vardaped’s life and time. We welcome and encourage other members to participate along with Ms. Galstian. If you wish to share Vardaped’s biography, his life story, poems or songs we would love to hear it no matter in what language it will be.

The admission to this even is free of charge, but there will be a small jar for your small donation.

I just wanted to make sure that you did not forget the saying ``Fall Back`` and

that you reset your clocks one hour back this

Sunday morning from 1:59 am to 1:00 am.

I also want to warn you that every year on this day, at Hayko Fine Rugs and

Tapestries, we trick ourselves. If you ask how, allow me to explain.

You see, we pretend that Saturday, November 6^th is Sunday and we reset our

clocks an hour back on Saturday and not on Sunday. As Saturdays are always

profitable than Sundays, then why not work an hour more on November 6^th.

You see, it doesn`t matter for Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries whether we ``Fall

Back or Spring Ahead``. My experienced staff and I will be working overtime this

Saturday, November 6^th, to keep our customers happy.

As you know we specialize in restoring and cleaning the finest antique carpets

and rugs. We also have a great collection of antique rugs and antique decorative

You may have noticed the unattractive and unappealing look next door to my shop. The corner of Lexington Ave and 65th Street has been unsettled for quite some time. As this situation has been going on for almost year and a half, I am afraid that the image of my shop looked very uninviting to my loyal customers.

Well, finally there is some change and as the sign on the board notes, the contraction and clean up of the site will be completed by December 31, 2011. It is a big relief for my workers and I, as the look of this site has been affecting negatively on my business. I would like to invite and encourage you to visit my shop during the construction of the next door building. Come and see the new additions to my collection of oriental and antique rugs, kilims, runners and pillows. When you find something that you would love, we will offer you a one week free trial at home. Stories from the Carpet Trade: A Life in Dealing and Collecting Rugs.

After learning about tribal and village rugs in Turkey, Iran, and Afghanistan, James Opie recorded what he learned in two major books: Tribal Rugs of Southern Persia (1981) and Tribal Rugs: Village and Nomadic Weavings of the Near East and Central Asia (1992.) This second book, considered the standard work on its subject, has been translated for Italian, French, and German editions.

James' deep interest in the origin of the oldest tribal rug motifs led to years of scholarly work. However, he also writes lighter pieces, based on his travels and on memorable individuals he has met. As important as the rugs, the "objects" have been for him, the people were even more important. This, he says, is what draws him to "Hayko's." His articles and other writings have appeared in HALI, Oriental Rug Review, Parabola,Material for Thought, Gurdjieff International Review, The New Yorker, and Utne Reader.

A popular lecturer, his only appearance in New York is at "Hayko's," as a means of lending support to an Oriental rug store that James refers to as "his very favorite in New York." His remarks on Thursday, November 19 will focus on individuals, unusual situations, and lessons learned in the course of a life devoted to the art, the culture, and the commerce of Oriental rugs.

These pieces are wonderful folk art for use in your home or office.We have a variety of patterns and colors - some colorful and whimsical, some sparse and using undyed wool in brown and ivory.

Gabbeh translates to "long-pile" rug. The people who wove these rugs are from the sub-groups of the Lori and Quasquai tribes in Iran. They are nomadic and use horizontal looms crudely- fashioned and might have literally picked- up "stakes" during the weaving, then resettled to finish the weaving. This can explain the charming irregularities you may encounter in some of the pieces! The rugs are easy to weave and would allow women to make a living while staying close to their families.

The pieces we have selected pre-date 1960.They are less commercial than the modern production of today. Traditionally,the sizes are of a small format, not large room-sized carpets. We have a range of sizes up to 5' x 8'.Traditionally, these rugs were made to be used by the people who wove them with little thought of a western market. Today, these rugs work beautifully in a modern or traditional setting and are sought after by decorators.

Concert for Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries to Benefit Unlikely and Beloved Showcase Venue for Roomful of Sky's Top Talent

NEW YORK, New York - June (date sent), 2009 - On Saturday, June 13, 7-10PM, some of the city's top musicians from the Roomful of Sky Records family will gather at the Meta Center at 214 West 29th Street on the 16th floor to support their unlikely and beloved Upper East Side performance venue, Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries. Nine acts will play a full night of "living room style" music to raise awareness and funds to support their friend Hayko Oltaci, one of the world's leading authorities on oriental rugs, and ensure the continued prosperity of his business - a carpet restoration, repair and retail shop. Ticket sale proceeds ($15 in advance/$20 at the door - $5 less with student I.D.) and a referral incentive (5% commission for anyone referring a sale) will help Hayko address possible challenging times ahead, as his friends help him prepare to rise above the city's economic downturn and avoid the financial plight plaguing increasing numbers of small business-owners.

When Phil and the Roomful of Sky family considered the city's economic situation and the possible effects on Hayko's operations, they decided to organize to ensure that Hayko's craftsmanship and his arts patronage would continue to thrive despite potential imminent challenges, and the idea for the "Save Hayko's" benefit concert was born. Performers will include accomplished folk/pop singer-songwriter of San Francisco fame, Noe Venable; alternative soul musician Bobby Kane, the male/female duo Kitch, Rich Casella of "guitar wizard" notoriety, bluesy multi-instrumentalist Jason Vitelli; Jessica Lee, edgy vocalist with 5-piece pop band; 5-piece southern blues band Katie Letts, Korean pop star JJ Bang, and Roomful of Sky president and Springsteenesque singer-songwriter Phil Robinson. In keeping with the ambiance of Hayko's shop, Jodi Serota, president of the Meta Center and the Roomful of Sky team have decided to decorate the Meta Center as a Turkish style salon, replete with candles, antique draperies and oriental rugs, as a backdrop for the event performances. All attendees will be automatically entered into a raffle to win an authentic antique Turkish carpet valued at $1,000.

Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries, unbeknownst to many urbanites, is transformed in the evenings into one of the city's most unique performance spaces for intimate creative collaboration. Hayko, a Turkish-born Armenian old-world artisan with a special gift for carpet restoration and repair, opened up his space to Roomful of Sky Records president Phil Robinson and his colleagues, for intimate shows and gatherings, after they met at one of Phil's salon-like Culture Circle events three years ago. Hayko, who had evidenced both talent and passion for art and music himself as a youth, recognized an opportunity to support the arts by inviting Phil and his creative community to gather at his store in the evenings, rather than in the rented spaces they were accustomed to using. Delighted to provide a unique venue for the city's burgeoning creative talent to socialize and perform with and for one another, Hayko explains, "the experience of people making music among the oriental rugs and lamps gives a beautiful feeling. I love music; it gives me courage and energy, and I use it to pray." "I am thankful to have such people in my life," Hayko states. Where in the world: New York, where his business,
Hayko Fine Rugs and Tapestries, has operated at 857
Lexington Ave. (at 65th Street) for 12 years.

Known for: Celebrating his heritage through sublime
rug designs. Oltaci’s showroom is the place where
patrons worldwide come for the finest in authentic rugs.
He works closely with museums, private collectors and
auction houses such as Christie’s, often over Turkish
coffee. Born in Istanbul to Armenian parents, he came to
New York City in 1988 with his wife (both of his daughters
were born in the U.S.). He learned his craft while
living in Strasbourg, France, for 10 years.

Quote: “Above all things, an honorable and forthright
relationship is by far the most important thing to me.”

What inspires him: An experience from his youth
sparked a lifelong pursuit of excellence, as Oltaci explains:
“My grandfather gave me a beautiful Turkish prayer rug
from the Konya Ladik region when I was 17. There was
a hole in the center of the rug and the selvage end was
missing. We knew a repair man and we brought it to him.
Three months later, we got it back. My heart was broken;
it was horrible what they did to it. They put a patch on the
hole and cut off the ends! It looked like a cheap machine-
made rug. This rug had been a beautiful work of art, like
a great painting. Now it was ruined by bad repair. I knew
at that moment I wanted to help save these great works of
art from my country.”

Next projects: Oltaci will be conducting classes in
the ancient art of rug weaving every month, a way to
share his passion with patrons. “Most of our clients are
by now old friends — they come back over and over
through the years,” he says. “We greatly value these
long-term relationships. We hope to meet more new
friends and look forward to working with them in the

The Ritz-Carlton hotels around the world celebrate and sup-
port the arts in so many unique ways, we felt it was important
now to present some of these experiences in our magazine.

Considering the beautiful objects and collections we display
in our hotels and resorts, the local exhibitions we underwrite
and partner with, and the launch of the new Ritz-Carlton Film Se-
ries (which you can read more about in our profile of cinematog-
rapher Joshua Hess on page 154), it’s more timely than ever to
introduce — or re-introduce, as the case may be — the people
who literally design, create and color our world.

What better way to announce this special issue than with
an original work of art on our cover? Having the opportunity to
review the work of illustrators from around the world was a real
treat for me, and when we decided to commission a piece by
the international artist Brett Ryder, I was thrilled with the beauti-
ful piece he came up with. The more I look at it and its sugges-
tion that we are virtually limitless in how our imaginations can
fly forth, the more I feel it portrays not only who we are as a brand, but
what we truly offer our guests in the way of thrilling experiences in the
arts. From Picasso exhibits in our lobbies to nature programs on our
beaches to packages that let our guests get behind the scenes at local
museums, The Ritz-Carlton celebrates the arts every single day.

When I was in Palm Beach recently, I noticed the unique collection
of “shoes” in the presidential suite (anytime I see shoes I am auto-
matically intrigued — what girl is not?). The story behind the design
of these shoes and the artist who creates them is fascinating, as is
the curation of the glass and sculpture collection at The Ritz-Carlton,
Westchester. You’ll see those and more about making a hotel room
feel more like a home in our story “Hotel, um ... Art?” on page 136.

Deciding which craftspeople to profile for our “In Studio” feature on
page 127 was an artistic exercise in its own right. We had to narrow
a list of more than 15 fascinating people down to four, and I’m sure
you’ll like whom we have decided to focus on. I am especially touched
by Turkish rug designer Hayk Oltaci’s story about how he become
involved in restoring these precious works of art.

Finally, though not technically part of the art theme, this issue’s spa
feature does have its artistic elements — and a very special meaning
for me. When I was pregnant last year, one of my favorite ways to relax
was to enjoy several maternity-specific massages and the VIP treat-
ment one receives at our properties when one is a “nurturer to be.”
You’ll learn all about that (and the fabulous Mama Mio products that go
with these treatments) on page 148. I’m still enjoying the line’s Tummy

Hayko was born in Istanbul to Armenian parents. He lived in Strasbourg, France from age 19 for 10 years. He came to New York City in 1988 with his wife; both daughters were born here. Hayko is widely respected for both the quality of his rugs and for his personal integrity. He works closely with museums and private collectors; he specially enjoys working with new owners, and encourages people to come in for Turkish coffee and a Look at his showroom located at 857 Lexington Avenue at 65th Street.
